2000s TV

The 2000s were a period of transition from the analog to the digital world, which was reflected in the TVs of the time. They were still CRT-based, but now silver, with flat screens, and equipped with front-facing speakers.

I'm not referring to TV programming, but to the television itself. The 2000s were a period of transition between the analog and digital worlds, which was reflected in the TVs of the time. They were still CRT-based, but now silver, with flat screens, and equipped with front-facing speakers. Furthermore, all now had at least three AV inputs. These changes gave the classic cathode-ray tube a more digital feel. One of the peculiarities of this period is that televisions had two power buttons: one for receiving power (Standby mode) and the other for actually turning on the screen (which had the incredible ability to energize the hairs on your arms).

Also at this time, TVs reached their peak in weight, with the ultimate symbol being the heavy Sony Trinitron, whose largest model was 40 inches. This was driven by the demand for ever-larger screens, which were encouraging the production of rear-projection TVs that formed the famous "home theater," or home cinema. These TVs came with dozens of inputs (no exaggeration), allowing connection to Dolby Digital 5.1 speakers, VCRs, and DVD players.

Therefore, TVs from the 2000s were very heavy, requiring at least two people to carry them (and with a lot of suffering). The Sony Trinitron was carried only by handcart.

In the second half of the decade, CRT TVs had to evolve once again to combat the rise of low-quality plasma TVs, which attracted attention for their thinner design. At the time, many people thought they were the future.

In the future there will be 820-inch plasma screens

Thus, the Ultra-Slim model emerged, a relatively lighter and thinner type of CRT, which prevented its rack from sagging under the weight. One of the most popular models was a Samsung released in 2007, which came with a few hidden games. This was perhaps the best-selling model of the late 2000s.

In this way, Ultra-Slim TVs guaranteed, at least in Brazil, the leadership of tube TVs until the turn of the decade.

*What ended it?

The future wouldn't be plasma, but LCD TVs. These surpassed the sales of CRT TVs in the first half of 2010 (in Brazil), largely due to the World Cup. Nowadays, care is taken to prevent TVs from breaking when dropped on the floor, whereas in the past, the risk was that the TV would break the floor (and anyone nearby).
