A good way to pass the time in the 2000s, especially if your internet connection was poor, was the games that came pre-installed on Windows XP. Many hours were undoubtedly spent playing pinball or solitaire (the latter, in fact, caused concern in corporate offices, as employees were frequently distracted by it). Today we'll take a look back at what came pre-installed:
Respectively, Solitaire and Spider Solitaire
Until 2005, Solitaire was the most popular game on the OS, surpassed by Spider. The difference between them, besides the spider theme, was that the former used one deck and consisted of building sequences of alternating colors, while the latter had two decks and required cards of the same suit in each row.
Another hit of the era was Minesweeper, where you must mark all the bombs with flags. The numbers indicate how far you are from the next mine.
Among the standard games, there were also "FreeCell" and "Hearts," but perhaps the most notable was Pinball (unfortunately discontinued as of Windows Vista). The music, gameplay, pre-rendered 3D graphics, and secret codes explain its popularity.
There were also online games, including Checkers, Spades, Backgammon, Reversi, and an online version of Hearts. Instead of facing a computer, you could duel in online multiplayer.
Finally, we can mention the unknown "Inkball", exclusive to the Tablet PC version. This game consists of using the mouse (or pen) to draw lines and guide the ball to the hole of the same color.
*What ended it?
The games were updated in Windows Vista and are still available in Windows 7 (without Pinball). However, this changed with Windows 8, which included games as a "freemium" package. This means paying to eliminate unwanted ads, whereas before, these ads didn't even exist.
