It's been 20 years since 2005... Today we're going to remember what things were like back then.

Nokia reigned supreme. That year, the best-selling mobile phone in history was launched, the Nokia 1110, a classic device at an affordable price.

At that time, almost every teenager had one of these, although they were mainly used for making calls, and they also came with some extra features like the iconic snake game. If you were more affluent, you could have something a little more sophisticated, like the LG Chocolate, which had a color screen, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a radio and an MP3 player. However, if you were a child, you probably wouldn't have had anything to do with a cell phone, at most a toy.

In this context, personal computers were more consolidated, and the absolute leading system was Windows XP. With it, the old Office design (which came with Clippy, the assistant), the now discontinued Movie Maker and Windows Media Player, and the now unfairly treated Internet Explorer 6.

2005 was the year YouTube was launched, but it was obviously not very well known yet.

For sending messages, the main option was MSN Messenger.

TV was a thing, and the most popular cartoons at the time were SpongeBob SquarePants (and the anticipation for the premiere of the fourth season) and Ben 10. But there were other relevant ones, such as Billy and Mandy, KND, Avatar, Kim Possible, What's New Scooby Doo?, etc.

As for music, there were various ways to listen to it. Discmans and iPods coexisted, and it was common to buy CD holders to accommodate the collection. Everything would be complete with a Microsystem. And something that was becoming popular at the time was Crazy Frog....

This Crazy Frog was a common one on one of those DVDs of Animated Clips, and speaking of DVDs... These discs were the main way to have movies, widely available in video stores. Back then they came with many extra features, considering the competition for VHS that still existed. The best ones were the ones from Disney.

Disney may have been the big winner in the video game market, but DreamWorks was the big name in the movie business. That year, in particular, its biggest release was the first "Madagascar." There were also a few stop-motion films in 2005, such as "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" and "Corpse Bride."

Fantasy films were all the rage at the time, some examples include "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe".

As for video games, Icy Tower was a common fad among PC games. On consoles, the PlayStation 2 dominated with titles such as Guitar Hero, God of War, and Winning Eleven 8.

And to keep the topic of games in mind, it is important to highlight the importance of gaming magazines (Digerati, for example). They provided information that was not available in the mainstream media. Since the Internet was still slow and little explored, magazines served niche audiences, and gaming magazines generally came with CDs containing hundreds of flash games.

Like magazines, printed publications such as books and newspapers were abundant, unlike what happens today.
