Copypastas are texts copied repeatedly from the internet, spreading like a kind of urban legend. They were extremely common in the 2000s, when they were used primarily to transmit frightening chain letters. Initially, they were seen as sinister messages or images sent from email to email. The most popular of these in the early days of the internet was Smile Dog.

Over the years, they also began to be republished on Orkut, for example. One of the most popular messages of the time was Samara's, first published in 2007:
"Hi, my name is Samara, I'm 14 years old (I would be if I were still alive). I died at 13 in Cascavel city. I was riding my bike when I couldn't avoid a barbed wire fence. The worst part was that the owner of the lot didn't want to help me; he laughed at me. After agonizing for two hours tangled in the wire, I passed away. Through this message, I ask that you allow me to rest in peace. Send this to 20 communities, and my soul will be saved by you and the other 20 who receive it. If you don't forward this message, I'll visit you tonight so you can see that wire up close.
On July 15th, Mariana decided to laugh at this message, and one night later she disappeared without a trace. The same happened to Karen on October 18th. Please don't break this chain. Unless you want to feel my presence."
The term emerged in 2006, and reached its peak in 2009. They were not only intended to scare, but also to provoke irritation.
*What ended it?
Copypastas lost their popularity in the 2010s with the centralization of the internet. These types of chain messages are no longer as common, although jokes are still frequently reposted.
