"I'm sorry but you threw off the emperors groove.."

While the '90s were populated by epic and melodramatic musical animations, the 2000s saw the rise of slapstick comedy with the release of Shrek (2001), a film that aimed to parody Disney fairy tales. While the 1990s were populated by epic and melodramatic musical animations, the 2000s saw the rise of slapstick comedy with the release of Shrek (2001), a film that aimed to parody Disney fairy tales. However, shortly before this, Disney itself had produced an animated film in this style that didn't take itself too seriously, generating one of the best comedies of all time: "The Emperor's New Groove" (2000).

The film wasn't a huge success upon release, but it became a cult classic upon its release on VHS in 2001. From then on, it became one of the greatest symbols of that decade, spawning a sequel (Kronk's New Groove) and a series (The Emperor's New School).

The story takes place during the Inca Empire, when Emperor Cuzco's wave was cut short by a random old man. Meanwhile, the royal advisor, Yzma, with the help of the clever Kronk, attempts to seize the throne. Her plan was simple: turn her into a flea, then put it in a box, then the box inside another box, mail the package to herself, and crush it with a hammer. The plan was brilliant, but instead she chose to simply kill him. Due to a mistake with the potions, Cuzco is transformed into a llama. Now he'll have to stop being arrogant and ask for help from the peasant he scorned (because he intended to build a resort in the man's house).

This film is full of iconic scenes, so many comedic moments in succession that it leaves the viewer breathless. Kronk alone could make a movie (and it really did).

*What happened to it?

The film and its sequel still had a few airings on network television between the late 2000s and early 2010s, but in the grand scheme of things, it's still somewhat forgotten within the Disney catalog. Fortunately, the internet has resurrected this masterpiece.
